I taught “Sound and Silence in Chinese Literature” first at the University of Chicago in an online format in Spring 2020, and it was very successful. I am excited about offering a revised version of this class at Dartmouth College in Summer 2026. This class introduces a wide range of literary texts from both premodern and modern China as well as key theoretical texts in sound studies. An exercise key to the class is what I call “short-circuit thinking”—creating productive connections and conversations between texts and ideas produced by different historical and cultural contexts.
