I will be offering this class for the third time at Dartmouth College in Fall 2025!
The course not only introduces major texts in the narrative traditions in China from the third to the nineteenth centuries but also leads students to read literature ecologically. In particular, we focus on discussing questions such as: If we consider ghosts to be a species, then how should we think differently about the relationship between the human and the nonhuman?
This class also has a creative writing component: through mini generative workshops conducted during the X hours, I guide students to develop their original ghost stories by borrowing storytelling techniques from the stories we read in class.
